Eddie's 1998 Grand Prix GTP - Replacing Heads after 300 miles!

Feb 2008 - A little over 6800 miles on the new engine and I'm pulling the heads back off. The engine was using oil, and I could smell oil when sitting at red lights. I was going to replace the valve seals just to see if it would help, and noticed something disturbing when I pulled the rocker arms on the front head. 2 of the 6 valve stems were worn almost to the keepers, and 2 others were getting close. I also noticed one of the valve seals was up against the retainer, and another was missing the ring that goes around the top to keep tension on the valve stem. I replaced these seals, and the oil smell went away, but I still have to fix the valves.
I found a set of ported heads with oversized valves for $300, and figured it would cost me at least that much - if not more - to have these heads fixed (since I'm not going back to the machine shop that did them the first time).

Update - May 2008 I had to R&R the heads again due to worn guides.
This time they got bronze guides, a new set of valves, and roller rockers. Click here for details

Here are 3 pic of the pistions onthe front bank (1,3, and 5) - look bad for only having 3000 miles...

Here are the rear bank cylinders (2,4, and 6)

Pics of the front head and valves...

Here are some pics of the port work on the new heads. Picture quality is not great, but all I had at work was my cell phone.
They're at Ball Engine Parts and Service right now (2-11-08) getting a few guides replaced and making sure everything is OK

Here are some pics of the heads when I got them back from the machine shop.
They were surfaced, and got new guides and a 3 angle valve job

Here is where I am at 1:10 Friday night/Saturday morning.
I started putting them back on about 11:00, but it's getting late so I guess I'll have to finish tomorrow...

More to come
